Periods. I feel this is a super important topic that needs to be discussed, period. (Lame pun totally intended.)
I myself have spent the last 21 years bleeding for about a week every 22-36 days; (let’s just say once a month to make math easier).
Because I’ll go through about a box of tampons and a pack of pads every cycle . . . according to a rough calculation I have gone through over 250 boxes of tampons and 250 packs of pads so far in my menstruating lifetime. And I still have an easy 20+ years to go.
This scares me!
The amount of waste created is unreal, and the amount of period stuff I have to bring on trips is also unreal. Ladies – I know I speak for many of us when I say I have used the larger handbag and travelled with a larger suitcase because of period products.
Pads cause ‘diaper rashes’ and tampons can feel like sandpaper on your vagina. Also, walking around a new city and getting sweaty with a pad on is absolutely no fun. I shall spare you the details. I’ve been trying different things the last few years and I think I found the solution.
Recommendation 1: Use a menstrual cup instead of a tampon!
Instead of taking a box of tampons for each period, take a cup. When it fills up, you take it out, dump it out, clean it up and put it back in. Wah-lah! You just went from a box to something that fits into the palm of your hand.
There’s a whole lot of cups out there these days. I’ve only tried one so far and I’m in love. If you need help figuring out which cup to buy and how to use it, this page has EVERYTHING.
Recommendation 2: Use THINX period panties* and kiss those pads (paper or cloth) goodbye for good!
I’ve tried my fair share of paper and cloth pads. Cloth definitely is so much better than the disposable ones, but there’s still one HUGE problem. There’s a bundle of cloth between your legs and it feels uncomfortable. I have always been terrified of said pad moving and a disaster happens, or the glue on the pad is so strong I have to scrub it off my panties. Either way, not fun.
Period panties do have a downside. It doesn’t feel as dry as pads do. For a super bleeder like me, knowing I have 2.5 tampons worth of blood, of extra support is a game changer.
The good news for your suitcase: in place of 1 big bulky pack of pads, you can pack 5 panties. I say 5 bc depending on where you go it takes longer for these babies to dry bc it must be hung to dry – not dried in the dryer!
