In the eyes of society, self-care doesn’t sound productive. We must stop valuing our worth with how much grind we are putting in. Many of us are busy, overwhelmed, tired, but productive and we wear it like a badge of honor.
What I have learned is slowing down is actually the best thing that I’ve done for myself.
You can’t give from an empty cup
It’ll say it many times. It’s true. When I don’t feel my best, I have a hard time providing the positive energy to my loved ones. I feel impatient, and angry. That’s not a good feeling to have towards people, especially a baby. Rest is important. Personal time is important. And so is time to clear your head. Whether that’s meditating, taking a walk, a bath, or writing, make sure to get the cobwebs out of your head.
My performance is better when I rest
Rest is incredibly under rated. People say they don’t have time for rest, but in reality, spending a few minutes to rest can increase your concentration. When you can concentrate better, you can do things better. How many times have you starred at a blank word document, because you need to come up with something but nothing is happening? A refreshing walk around the block does wonders.
Be in the present moment
Anxiety, overthinking, and the what-ifs come when we’re thinking about the unchangeable past, or the unknown future that’s yet to come. Being in the present moment does wonders. It takes stress away, and brings concentration. It helps us feel love, and live at your fullest in that moment.
As I write this, I am thinking about my past experiences, but every time I’m about to spiral I shift my attention to my surroundings. The sound of the cicadas, the warm breeze on my face. The smell of decaf coffee. The humidity against my skin. The leafs swaying with the wind. It puts me right back at where I am, and what I need to do naturally flows.
We need to stop putting a value on being exhausted, and start valuing how we rest our bodies. Everything else can come after that. If you’re thinking ‘my gawd, I don’t have time to rest!! What’s this woman going on about!?’, than I have a feeling you’ll enjoy my self-care guide. There’s a mini quiz that tells you what stage of self-care you’re at, and steps you can take to level up. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
