I traveled to New York in November for the first time. The weather was gorgeous and mild in the 60s. I had a coat on, but I wasn’t shivering at night. It was perfect to walk around in and explore the city.
Every time I come to New York, I do a lot of shopping, eating, drinking, meeting friends and family. This time, I was doing less shopping, eating and drinking, and decided to add yoga into my days. I found out the Sivananda Center is on 24th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from where I was staying in. For me to get to the Sivananda Center in Tokyo it takes 3 times longer, 1.5hours one way. I felt this was a great opportunity to get my practice in at a center.
Classes are $12 for non-members and $2 for a rental yoga mat towel. I’m used to seeing prices for class around $30-$50 in Tokyo, so I felt like they should really charge more. During my stay, I attended 5 classes, 2 morning classes, and 3 afternoon classes. I felt the morning classes are generally more packed. When you teach yoga classes, you don’t attend other people’s classes as much. So each class truly felt like a real treat. The class sequence is always the same for the 90-minute open class. Each teacher has a different tone of voice, a different momentum, and threw in different variations. Some of the variations challenged me enough to keep me on my toes, but not enough to push myself too hard to injure myself. It was just right in every sense.
The Center itself has been there for 50+ years. One of the days I was there, there was a grandpa that mentioned he has been coming to the center every week for 30 years. AMAZING! He seemed older than my grandpa when he passed, but this gentleman’s spine was straight, and he walked fast. It is amazing what a dedicated practice can do.
Wanna know something else about the center? There’s a resident cat, named Brahman. He’s very sweet and friendly. I was wondering if there’s a cat because I saw a little bed, some toys, and a kitty water fountain. My guess was right! I was able to meet him on my 4th visit 🙂 Unfortunately he wasn’t around for my last visit :/
If you are visiting the city or live there, I highly recommend you check out the Sivananda center!
If you are new to yoga or new to the Sivananda style, there are beginner’s classes on Mondays 7:45-9:15PM and Saturdays 12:15-13:45PM. For Open classes, and other class schedules please check on the Sivananda NYC website.
